Charging in Minnesota

Minnesota's charging is heavily Twin Cities. Minneapolis and Saint Paul together hold a large share of the state's locations, and the suburban ring of Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove, Woodbury, Plymouth and Eagan adds steady coverage in every direction. Outside the metro, Rochester and Duluth are the only sizeable clusters, and the north and west thin out fast.

Only about one in five ports here is DC fast, so this is a Level 2 state at heart and stops take longer than the totals imply. ChargePoint leads, with ZEF Energy notably present, plus Tesla, Blink Charging and EV Connect.

On the road

I-94 runs west toward Saint Cloud, Fargo and the plains and east to Eau Claire; I-35 splits through the Twin Cities and carries traffic north to Duluth and south to Iowa; I-90 tracks the southern border south of Rochester and through Albert Lea. Those routes are covered well enough for planned trips. US-53 up to the Iron Range and the roads out west toward the Dakotas are where fast charging genuinely thins.

Plugs and payment

J1772 for Level 2 and CCS1 for most DC fast, with NACS spreading at newer stations and Tesla's own, and CHAdeMO surviving only on older units. Cables are fitted to Level 2 posts. Tap-to-pay is common in the metro but less so at greater-Minnesota sites, so have the network apps set up before you leave.

Three things to know

Deep cold cuts range sharply, so precondition on the plug and budget more energy for January drives north.
The DC fast share is low, so plan longer Level 2 stops or route through the Twin Cities.
Heading for the North Shore or the Iron Range, charge in Duluth and treat the map as thin beyond.
