Charging in Missouri

Missouri's charging leans heavily toward Kansas City, which holds more locations than St. Louis, Springfield and Columbia put together, and suburbs like Lee's Summit and Blue Springs add to that. The eastern metro reads better once you count Saint Charles and the suburbs, but the split is real: the western side of the state has the denser network.

Statewide, about a quarter of the ports are DC fast and the rest are Level 2 in garages, hotels and retail lots. ChargePoint leads on number of locations, followed by Tesla and Blink Charging, with eVgo Network and AmpUp adding fast and workplace sites. Springfield and Columbia are usable stops rather than places you'd expect a choice of chargers.

On the road

I-70 is the spine, running Kansas City to Columbia to St. Louis, and it is the easiest long drive to plan here. I-44 heads southwest from St. Louis through Springfield toward Joplin, thinning as it goes. I-55 runs south along the Mississippi and I-35 north out of Kansas City. The Ozarks in between are the sparse part, so plan around the towns on the interstates.

Plugs and payment

J1772 is the standard Level 2 plug across Missouri and CCS1 is still the common DC fast connector, with NACS turning up on newer stalls and on Tesla sites that have opened to other cars. CHAdeMO is legacy, so assume one cable at best. Most Level 2 posts have their cable attached; card readers exist, but an app or RFID card is more dependable.

Three things to know

  • Kansas City and its Kansas-side suburbs form one charging cluster; treat the metro as a single planning zone.
  • Crossing the Ozarks on smaller highways, leave more buffer than map distance suggests, because the hills eat range.
  • Humid summers mean cabin cooling runs hard, so charge to your target rather than shaving margins in July.
