Charging in Montana

Montana has fewer than a hundred charging locations spread over an enormous area, and they do not track population. Bozeman and Missoula each show slightly under twenty, Helena around fourteen and Great Falls ten, while Billings, the biggest city in the state, has only a handful. Butte and Kalispell are smaller again.

Roughly four in ten of the state's ports are DC fast, so more than half of what you find is Level 2 at hotels, town lots and trailheads. ChargePoint and Tesla lead on locations, with Blink Charging and Electrify America behind them. That mix rewards a slower itinerary: charge while you sleep or while you eat, and use the fast sites to bridge between valleys rather than as the whole plan.

On the road

I-90 is the main east-west run, connecting Missoula, Butte, Bozeman and Billings, and it has the steadiest coverage. I-15 links Butte, Helena and Great Falls north to the border, and I-94 heads east out of Billings toward the Dakotas. US 93 up the Flathead toward Kalispell and US 2 along the northern tier are far thinner, with long distances between anywhere worth stopping.

Plugs and payment

Level 2 is J1772 and normally cable-attached. DC fast means CCS1 alongside Tesla connectors, with NACS showing up on newer installations; bring the adapter for your car. CHAdeMO is legacy and rare. Tap-to-pay is hit and miss outside the larger towns, so set up network accounts in advance rather than at a trailhead with no bars.

Three things to know

Deep winter cold slows charging and cuts range sharply; precondition the battery before you reach a fast charger.
Mountain passes and headwinds between valleys cost more than the mileage suggests, so leave a wide buffer.
In small towns the only charger may be at a hotel or civic lot: check it works before committing to the route.
