Charging in Nebraska

Nebraska has a small network for a big state, and Omaha and Lincoln hold more than half of it. What makes the rest workable is that the smaller towns with charging, places like Kearney, North Platte, Norfolk and Columbus, are the ones on the main routes, so coverage lines up with where people actually drive.

A bit over a quarter of the ports are DC fast; the rest are Level 2 at hotels, dealerships and municipal lots. ChargePoint accounts for the most locations, with Tesla, Blink Charging, EV Connect and AmpUp behind it. Outside the two cities, expect one or two options per town rather than a choice.

On the road

I-80 does most of the work here, tracking the Platte from Omaha through Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney and North Platte to the Wyoming line, and the charging follows it. I-29 runs just across the Missouri on the Iowa side and serves Omaha from the east. North of the interstate, US-20 and US-83 cross the Sandhills with very little in between, and that is the part to plan properly rather than improvise.

Plugs and payment

Level 2 here is J1772 and DC fast is mostly CCS1, with NACS appearing on newer installs and on Tesla's own sites. A little CHAdeMO lingers at older locations. Cables come attached to Level 2 posts. Card readers are less common than in bigger states, so set the network apps up with a payment method before you leave town.

Three things to know

  • Plan I-80 town to town; leaving the interstate in western Nebraska means long distances with almost nothing between.
  • Winter here is genuinely cold, and preconditioning while still plugged in saves both range and charging time.
  • In small towns the single charger may be occupied or offline, so know your backup before you commit.
