Charging in New Jersey

New Jersey is densely covered for its size, and the map tilts toward the north and the Hudson waterfront. Jersey City has the most locations of any city here, ahead of Newark, and Camden, Edison, Elizabeth and Clifton all hold solid clusters. Coverage follows the population south and along the shore, thinning out through the Pine Barrens.

Roughly one port in five is DC fast, a healthy share for such a commuter-heavy state, though most sites are Level 2 at apartment blocks, offices and retail parking. ChargePoint leads the networks, followed by Tesla, Blink Charging, Shell Recharge Solutions and EV Connect.

On the road

The New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway carry most through traffic, and their service areas are the obvious places to look for fast charging without leaving the road. I-78 and I-80 run west toward Pennsylvania, and the Atlantic City Expressway crosses to the shore. Coverage is strongest on the northern approaches to New York and around Philadelphia, and thinnest through the Pine Barrens.

Plugs and payment

J1772 for Level 2 and CCS1 with NACS at fast sites, with CHAdeMO cables still on some older units. Bring your own cable, since posts are usually untethered. Highway service-area chargers generally take a contactless tap, while apartment, office and municipal posts more often want the network app set up beforehand.

Three things to know

  • Turnpike and Parkway stops get busy on summer weekends, so charge midweek or off-peak where you can.
  • Shore towns swell in summer and empty in winter, so check a seasonal site is open in the off season.
  • Dense street parking makes home charging harder, so many drivers lean on nearby retail Level 2 overnight.
