Charging in New York

New York is really two charging worlds. The five boroughs hold thousands of locations between them, concentrated in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, mostly Level 2 in parking garages rather than at the kerb, with the Bronx thinner and Staten Island thinner still. Upstate, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and the Hudson Valley towns form their own smaller clusters with long rural gaps between them.

Statewide only about one port in eight is DC fast, which reflects all that garage charging. ChargePoint runs the most locations, with Tesla, EV Connect, Blink Charging and ViaLynk - Lynkwell rounding out the biggest networks.

On the road

The Thruway carries most long-distance driving: I-87 north from the city up the Hudson and on toward the Adirondacks, and I-90 west through Albany, Utica, Syracuse and Rochester to Buffalo. I-81 runs north to south through Syracuse, and the Long Island Expressway heads east from the city. Fast charging follows those routes reasonably well. The Adirondacks, Catskills and Southern Tier are where the gaps open up.

Plugs and payment

J1772 on Level 2, CCS1 and NACS on fast chargers, with legacy CHAdeMO still present at older sites. Garage posts are untethered, so travel with a cable. Tap to pay is common on newer highway chargers, while city garages usually bill through the parking operator or a network app, so check both before you plug in.

Three things to know

City charging usually means a parking garage, so factor the hourly parking rate into what a session really costs.
Upstate winters are long and snowy, so plan shorter legs and keep a bigger buffer through the cold months.
Adirondack and Catskill routes are sparse, so charge in the valley towns before heading into the parks.
