Charging in North Carolina
North Carolina's charging tracks the Piedmont crescent. Charlotte has by far the most locations, the Triangle adds Raleigh, Cary and Durham as a strong second cluster, and Asheville does well for its size. Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, Fayetteville and Wilmington all look thin against their populations.
Around one port in six is DC fast, so most of the map is Level 2 at workplaces, hotels and shopping centers, handy when you are staying put and less so mid-trip. ChargePoint and Blink Charging are the biggest names, with Tesla, EV Connect and Loop also in the mix.
On the road
I-85 threads the Piedmont from Charlotte through Greensboro to Durham and is the best-covered route in the state. I-40 crosses the whole width, climbing west toward Asheville and the Tennessee line and running east to Raleigh and on to Wilmington. I-95 cuts north to south through the coastal plain as the main Florida run, and I-77 heads north from Charlotte. Coverage tails off between the interstate towns.
Plugs and payment
Level 2 is J1772, fast charging splits between CCS1 and NACS, and CHAdeMO survives only for older cars. Shopping center and hotel posts nearly always have their cables attached. Tap-to-pay shows up at newer highway sites, while older units want an app or an RFID card, so register the accounts before a long drive.
Three things to know
- Mountain routes near Asheville and the Parkway have very little, so charge in town before heading up.
- Coastal storms and evacuation traffic can close routes, so keep a fuller battery through hurricane season.
- Charlotte and the Triangle have the deepest coverage; the stretch between them is where to plan your stop.
