Charging in North Dakota

North Dakota has one of the smallest networks in the country, but an unusually high share of it is DC fast, more than half the ports, which matters far more than the raw count when you are crossing the state. Bismarck, Fargo and West Fargo hold the biggest clusters, and Williston out in the northwest has next to nothing.

The Level 2 that exists sits at hotels, city lots and dealerships. ChargePoint has the most locations, and ZEF Energy is a genuine regional presence here alongside Tesla, Blink Charging and EV Connect. Treat any working charger you pass as one worth using rather than one to skip.

On the road

I-94 runs east to west across the southern half, Fargo to Bismarck to Dickinson and on toward Montana, and it is the route the state's charging is built around. I-29 heads north from Fargo to Grand Forks along the Red River valley. US-2 is the northern route through Minot toward Williston, and it is thinner, so check what is open before you rely on it.

Plugs and payment

J1772 for Level 2, CCS1 for most DC fast, NACS on newer stalls and Tesla sites, and the occasional CHAdeMO cable left over. Level 2 cables are attached. In deep cold, connectors and cables stiffen and sessions start slower than usual, so give the car a few extra minutes before assuming something has faulted.

Three things to know

Winter range loss here is severe; plan on well under your summer figure and charge more often.
The high share of DC fast makes long drives workable, but sites are far apart, so never skip one casually.
Northwest of Minot the coverage thins right out; arrive in Williston with real margin, not a rounding error.
