EV charging stations in Ohio

1,466 charging locations and 4,039 ports across 90 cities and towns, 923 of them DC fast.

Charging in Ohio

Ohio's charging is spread across several metros rather than concentrated in one. Columbus has the biggest single cluster, with Cincinnati and Dayton next, while Cleveland, Toledo and Akron carry smaller but usable clusters. Between them coverage thins quickly: Parma and Canton have a handful of locations each, and Youngstown and Lorain barely register.

About a quarter of Ohio's ports are DC fast, so most of what you'll find is Level 2 sitting in parking garages, hotel lots and workplace spaces. ChargePoint runs the largest number of locations, with Blink Charging, Tesla, FLO and AmpUp behind it.

On the road

Ohio is a crossroads state. I-71 links Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati, I-75 runs from Toledo down through Dayton to Cincinnati, I-70 crosses west to east through Columbus, and the Ohio Turnpike carries I-80/90 along the north. Fast charging follows those routes reasonably well near the metros and at the larger travel plazas; the gaps show up on the farm-country stretches between interchanges, where you can go a long way without a fast option.

Plugs and payment

J1772 is the standard Level 2 plug and CCS1 still handles most DC fast charging, with NACS appearing at newer sites and at Tesla locations in the metros. CHAdeMO survives only on older units. Level 2 posts almost always have their own cables. Tap-to-pay is hit and miss, so keep a couple of network apps set up.

Three things to know

  • Lake-effect snow off Lake Erie slows winter driving across northeast Ohio, so leave extra range on cold days.
  • Youngstown and Lorain have very few locations, so charge in Cleveland or Akron before heading into that corner.
  • Much metro charging sits in parking garages; check height limits and closing times before you rely on one overnight.
