Charging in Oklahoma

Oklahoma is the fast-charging outlier in this part of the country: more than half its ports are DC fast, a much higher share than Texas, Kansas or Missouri. That comes from a build-out along the highways rather than dense city coverage, so Oklahoma City and Tulsa lead on locations with Edmond close behind and Norman, Moore and Broken Arrow following.

ChargePoint has the widest spread, but the names that make Oklahoma unusual are EV Energy Group and Francis Energy, both with a real footprint here, alongside Tesla and Blink Charging. Level 2 still fills the hotels and workplace lots, but it is the DC fast network that shapes how you plan a trip.

On the road

I-40 crosses the state west to east through Oklahoma City, and I-44 runs diagonally as the Turner and Will Rogers turnpikes, tying Lawton, Oklahoma City and Tulsa together toward Missouri. I-35 carries north-south traffic through Norman and Oklahoma City. Coverage along these routes is better than the state's total location count implies, precisely because so much of it is fast rather than Level 2.

Plugs and payment

J1772 on Level 2 and CCS1 on the great majority of DC fast stalls, with NACS on newer builds and on Tesla's own network. CHAdeMO survives at a few older sites. Level 2 cables are attached. Contactless card payment is reasonably common on the newer highway fast chargers, but keep an app installed as a backup.

Three things to know

  • Summer heat slows DC charging as the pack warms, so expect a lower peak on a hot afternoon.
  • The turnpike corridors are the strongest routes; route longer trips onto I-44 and I-40 where you can.
  • Southwest of Lawton and out in the panhandle coverage thins, so treat those legs as sparse-country driving.
