Charging in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is a big state with its charging clustered at the two ends. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are by far the largest clusters, with the Lehigh Valley towns of Bethlehem and Allentown, plus Lancaster, Bensalem and Abington, forming a secondary band. Across the middle and the north the map gets noticeably sparse, and cities like Erie, Scranton and Reading carry only a modest handful each.
Around a quarter of the state's ports are DC fast, a good ratio, so where charging does exist it is often quick. ChargePoint has the most locations, followed by Blink Charging, Tesla, Flash Charging and Shell Recharge Solutions.
On the road
The Pennsylvania Turnpike, I-76, is the main east to west run, linking Philadelphia to Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, and it is the first route to plan a crossing around. I-80 crosses the northern half of the state, I-81 comes down through Scranton and Harrisburg, and I-79 links Erie to Pittsburgh. Between the two metros the Alleghenies are thin, so leave a real margin on the mountain sections.
Plugs and payment
Level 2 is J1772, and fast sites use CCS1 and NACS, with a scattering of CHAdeMO still working at older locations. Most posts are untethered, so keep a cable with you. Contactless tap is normal at turnpike and highway chargers, while hotel, garage and small-town posts more often need a network app or membership card.
Three things to know
- Mountain grades on the turnpike and I-80 cost range on the climb, so stop before the summits.
- Rural central Pennsylvania is thin, so treat a working fast charger there as your stop rather than pressing on.
- Winter cold slows charging speeds, so allow longer sessions and clear road salt off the connector first.
