Charging in Rhode Island
For its size Rhode Island is well covered. Providence has the most locations, but East Providence, North Providence and Cranston all hold surprising numbers for their population, so the metro works as one large charging zone. Warwick and Pawtucket add more, while some sizeable towns, Coventry among them, still show nothing at all.
Under a fifth of the state's ports are DC fast, so the stock is mostly Level 2 at retail plazas, municipal lots and workplaces. That is workable in a state you can cross in about an hour. ChargePoint runs the most locations, followed by Shell Recharge Solutions, Blink Charging, AmpUp and Tesla.
On the road
I-95 cuts diagonally across the state from the Connecticut line through Providence and on toward Massachusetts, and it is the first place to look for fast charging. I-195 branches east toward Fall River, while Route 4 and US 1 run down to South County and the coast. Nowhere is far here, so a detour of a few miles usually reaches a charger even when the highway exit itself has none.
Plugs and payment
Level 2 is J1772, fast charging is CCS1 and NACS, and a handful of CHAdeMO connectors remain at older sites. Posts are generally untethered, so bring your own cable. Tap to pay is increasingly standard on new fast chargers, while older plaza and municipal units lean on network apps that are worth setting up in advance.
Three things to know
- Beach traffic makes South County and Newport slow in summer, so charge before you head down the coast.
- Coastal salt air is hard on outdoor equipment, so keep a backup site in mind if one is down.
- The metro is compact enough to treat Providence and its neighbouring cities as a single charging pool.
