Charging in South Carolina

South Carolina's charging is modest and clustered in three places: the Upstate around Greenville, the Midlands around Columbia, and the Lowcountry around Charleston and North Charleston. Hilton Head Island does well for a resort of its size. Away from those, towns like Sumter and Goose Creek have only a handful of locations between them.

About one port in five is DC fast, and the rest is Level 2 spread across hotels, shopping centers and municipal lots, which suits visitors staying overnight more than drivers passing through. ChargePoint and Tesla appear most often, followed by Blink Charging, EV Connect and eVgo Network.

On the road

I-85 through the Upstate, between Atlanta and Charlotte, is the busiest corridor and the best served. I-26 runs diagonally from Columbia down to Charleston, I-95 crosses the coastal plain as the main east coast run, and I-20 links Columbia west toward Augusta. I-95 passes few large towns in South Carolina, so pick your stop before you actually need it.

Plugs and payment

J1772 for Level 2, CCS1 and NACS for fast charging, with CHAdeMO now legacy. Resort and hotel chargers on the coast usually have their own cables, while some municipal pedestals do not, so keep a J1772 lead in the car. Newer fast sites take a contactless card, older ones expect the network app.

Summer heat and humidity push cooling loads up, so expect slightly less range than the display promises.
Beach weekends fill Hilton Head and Charleston chargers, so plug in on arrival rather than the night you leave.
Rural stretches between Columbia and the coast are sparse; treat the interstate towns as your charging points.
