Charging in South Dakota

South Dakota's network is small and split between two ends of the state: Sioux Falls in the east and Rapid City in the west, with Aberdeen, Brookings and Watertown adding a handful each. In between there is very little, and that is the single most important thing to know before driving across.

The upside is that a large share of the ports are DC fast rather than Level 2, so what exists is genuinely useful for travel and not just overnight top-ups. ChargePoint and Tesla have the most locations, with Blink Charging, Red E Charge and EV Connect also present around the two cities.

On the road

I-90 is the crossing, Sioux Falls to Mitchell to Rapid City, and it is the route to plan any long drive around. I-29 runs north to south along the eastern edge through Brookings and Watertown. The Black Hills loop on US-16 and US-385 is served out of Rapid City, but the stretch across the middle of the state is the long leg you should prepare for.

Plugs and payment

J1772 on Level 2, CCS1 on most DC fast, NACS on newer hardware and Tesla posts, and CHAdeMO only as a legacy leftover. Cables are attached at Level 2. Payment usually runs through the network app rather than a card reader, so set your accounts up in Sioux Falls or Rapid City before heading out.

The middle of the state is the gap; leave Sioux Falls or Rapid City full, not merely comfortable.
Black Hills climbs use more than flat miles suggest, though the descent gives some of that range back.
Winter wind and cold combine badly here, so confirm a site is live before committing to a long leg.
