Charging in Tennessee
Nashville dominates charging in Tennessee, holding more locations than the other big cities combined. Chattanooga, Knoxville and Memphis follow at a distance, and the commuter belt around Murfreesboro and Franklin adds a useful cluster of its own.
Memphis is noticeably light for its population, which matters if you are crossing the state from west to east. Most ports are Level 2 and only about one in five is DC fast, so overnight and destination charging carry much of the load. ChargePoint and Blink Charging lead on locations, with Tesla, SWTCH - Charge Everywhere and eVgo Network also present.
On the road
I-40 is the spine, running Memphis to Nashville to Knoxville, and it links the cities with the most charging. I-24 joins Nashville to Chattanooga, I-75 and I-81 carry traffic northeast through the valley, and I-65 runs north to south through Nashville. The long stretch of I-40 west of Nashville passes few towns with much charging, so that is the leg to plan around carefully.
Plugs and payment
J1772 on Level 2 and a CCS1 and NACS mix on DC fast, with adapters increasingly common as NACS spreads. CHAdeMO is legacy. Public posts have the cable attached; what earns its place in the trunk is an adapter for the other fast standard and a mobile connector for hotel outlets.
Three things to know
- East Tennessee climbs into the mountains, so expect higher consumption uphill and some of it returned on descent.
- Memphis has fewer locations than its size suggests, so top up before long westbound legs.
- Winter cold in the highlands slows charging, so precondition where you can and allow longer sessions.
