Charging in Texas

Texas has by far the largest network in this region and it is concentrated in the Triangle. Austin has the most charging locations of any city here, ahead of Houston and Dallas, with San Antonio, Fort Worth, Plano and Arlington also well covered. The border and coastal cities are the surprise: El Paso, Corpus Christi and Laredo have far fewer than their size suggests.

About a quarter of the state's ports are DC fast, which in absolute terms is a great deal of highway charging. ChargePoint and Blink Charging have the most locations, with Tesla, eVgo Network and Universal EV Charging also widespread across the metros.

On the road

I-35 links San Antonio, Austin, Waco and Dallas, and it is the best-served long drive in Texas. I-45 connects Dallas and Houston, I-10 runs Houston to San Antonio and then west toward El Paso where the gaps get genuinely long, and I-20 crosses the north through Fort Worth. West of the Hill Country, treat every stop as one you should take.

Plugs and payment

J1772 handles Level 2 and CCS1 most DC fast, with NACS spreading on new hardware and on Tesla sites open to other cars. CHAdeMO is legacy. Level 2 cables are attached; contactless readers are common in the big metros and rarer out west, so keep the main network apps installed and funded.

Three things to know

Texas heat cuts DC charging speed, so charge earlier in the day or after dark where you can.
West of the Hill Country the gaps are real; charge before leaving the metros rather than mid-desert.
Metro charging often sits in garages and retail lots, so check opening hours and height clearance first.
