Charging in Utah

Utah's charging follows the Wasatch Front almost exactly. Salt Lake City alone holds around 150 charging locations, and West Valley City, Orem, Sandy, South Jordan and Ogden each add dozens, so the strip from Ogden down through Provo is where the network really lives. Provo and West Jordan look light for their size, but they are minutes from denser neighbours.

About a quarter of the state's ports are DC fast, with the rest Level 2 around the cities. ChargePoint leads on location count, with Blink Charging and Tesla next and SemaConnect and Chargelab behind them. St George anchors the southwest corner. Between the Front and the canyon country, coverage thins out to a handful of towns.

On the road

I-15 runs the length of the state, from St George up through Provo, Salt Lake City and Ogden, and it carries most of the fast charging. I-80 crosses east toward Wyoming and west over the salt flats, where services are widely spaced. I-70 across southern Utah and the routes toward Moab and the national parks are the sparse ones: treat each town there as a planned stop rather than a convenience.

Plugs and payment

Level 2 is J1772 and almost always cable-attached. DC fast sites run CCS1 with Tesla connectors alongside, and NACS is turning up on newer builds; adapters bridge the gap either way. CHAdeMO is legacy and getting scarce. Contactless card readers are normal in Salt Lake and Provo but less reliable in small southern towns, so have the network apps ready.

Three things to know

Summer heat in the southwest desert and around St George raises consumption; charge to a bigger buffer than usual.
Winter inversions on the Wasatch Front mean cold soaks and slower charging, so precondition while still plugged in.
Canyon and park routes have few chargers: fill up in the last real town before you turn off the interstate.
