Charging in Virginia

Virginia's charging is lopsided toward the north. Arlington and Alexandria between them hold more locations than the entire Hampton Roads area, feeding off the Washington commuter belt. Richmond anchors the center of the state, Norfolk and Chesapeake cover the coast, and Roanoke serves the southwest, while Virginia Beach, Newport News and Hampton have surprisingly little for their size.

Fast charging is a genuine strength here: around a quarter of ports are DC fast, a higher share than in neighboring Maryland or North Carolina. ChargePoint and Blink Charging cover the most ground, with Tesla, eVgo Network and Shell Recharge Solutions concentrated along the main routes.

On the road

I-95 from the Washington suburbs through Fredericksburg to Richmond carries the heaviest traffic and the most fast charging. I-64 runs east to Hampton Roads and west over the Blue Ridge toward Staunton, while I-81 tracks the Shenandoah Valley the length of the state and I-66 links the capital region westward. On the Blue Ridge Parkway itself, expect very little: charge in the valley towns.

Plugs and payment

J1772 for Level 2, CCS1 and NACS at fast sites, CHAdeMO only as a legacy option. Northern Virginia garages usually have tethered cables, while rural and state park sites are more likely to be plain pedestals. Tap-to-pay is common on newer fast chargers along the interstates, less so at hotels and municipal lots.

Three things to know

  • Mountain crossings on I-64 and I-81 eat range on the climb, though you get some of it back descending.
  • Hampton Roads tunnels back up badly, so leave with enough charge to sit in traffic with the climate running.
  • Coverage thins quickly outside the main cities, so treat Roanoke and Richmond as your anchor points in the south and west.
