Charging in West Virginia
West Virginia has one of the thinnest charging maps of any state we cover. The whole state carries fewer locations than a single mid-sized city elsewhere, and they are scattered across a handful of towns. Morgantown has the most, Parkersburg follows, Charleston and Huntington each hold a small cluster, and Wheeling is down to a single location.
The bright spot is quality over quantity: something close to half the ports are DC fast, so the sites that do exist are often useful ones rather than slow overnight posts. ChargePoint and Tesla turn up most often, with EV Connect and Blink Charging adding a few more.
On the road
I-79 links Morgantown to Charleston and is the spine most drivers use. I-77 runs south as the West Virginia Turnpike, I-64 crosses west toward Huntington, and I-68 heads east over the mountains into Maryland. Between those routes, the two-lane roads through the Alleghenies can run a very long way with nothing at all, so treat each interstate town as a checkpoint and stop while you can.
Plugs and payment
J1772 handles Level 2, CCS1 and NACS the fast chargers, and CHAdeMO is legacy here as everywhere. With so few sites, carry your portable Level 1 or Level 2 cable, since a hotel or campground outlet may be your backup. Do not assume tap-to-pay, and set up the network apps before you lose phone signal.
Three things to know
- Long mountain climbs cut range hard, so plan on arriving with more margin than a flat-state trip needs.
- Phone coverage drops in the valleys; download your route and set up payment before you leave town.
- Winters are genuinely cold and snowy at elevation, so precondition the battery and expect slower charging speeds.
