Charging in Wisconsin
Wisconsin runs a small network with an unusually fast one inside it. Madison has more charging locations than Milwaukee despite being about half the size, likely helped by state and campus parking, and Appleton, Oshkosh and Green Bay in the northeast add a workable cluster together with Eau Claire and Janesville. Kenosha and Racine have almost nothing, despite sitting on the busy I-94 corridor.
Well over a third of Wisconsin's ports are DC fast, a high share, so highway stops are easier than the modest location count suggests. ChargePoint and Tesla lead, with Blink Charging, EV Connect and EVgo behind them.
On the road
I-94 carries the main run from Milwaukee through Madison to the Twin Cities, with I-90 sharing the road from Madison to Tomah before continuing to La Crosse. I-43 links Milwaukee to Green Bay and I-41 threads the Fox Valley. Fast charging along those is reasonable. Head north on US-51 toward Wausau and the lake country, or west into the coulee region, and spacing gets long quickly.
Plugs and payment
J1772 on Level 2, CCS1 on most DC fast, NACS turning up at newer stations and at Tesla's own locations, CHAdeMO only as legacy. Level 2 posts come with cables. Card readers are common on the newer fast chargers along I-94, less so at municipal and park chargers up north, so carry the apps.
Three things to know
- Northern winters are severe and stations are far apart, so charge before leaving Wausau, Eau Claire or Green Bay.
- Madison has more locations than Milwaukee, which makes it the easier place to stop when crossing the state.
- Kenosha and Racine are sparse despite the I-94 traffic, so do not count on charging between Milwaukee and Illinois.
