Charging in Wyoming

Wyoming is genuinely sparse. The whole state carries only a few dozen charging locations, and the largest single cluster, Cheyenne, is a dozen. Laramie has about ten, and Rock Springs, Gillette and Casper are in single figures. Driving here means planning around specific towns rather than assuming something will turn up.

The upside is that what exists skews heavily toward DC fast: most of the state's ports can add real range quickly, which suggests the sites were built for through traffic rather than overnight parking. Tesla has the most locations, with ChargePoint, eVgo Network, Electrify America and EV Connect making up the rest. Level 2 is thin outside hotels, so treat an overnight plug as a bonus rather than the plan.

On the road

I-80 across the south is the reliable route, tying together Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins, Rock Springs and Evanston. I-25 runs north from Cheyenne through Casper, and I-90 cuts across the northeast past Gillette and Buffalo. Away from those three, on the highways toward Jackson, the Bighorns and the Yellowstone gates, gaps get very long and elevation is high throughout, so arrive with real margin.

Plugs and payment

J1772 for Level 2, CCS1 plus Tesla connectors on the DC fast sites, with NACS appearing on newer stalls. Carry whatever adapter your car needs, because you do not get a second choice of station out here. CHAdeMO is legacy. Card readers exist at some highway sites, but download the apps and set up accounts before you leave a town with signal.

Three things to know

  • Wind and cold on the high plains hit range hard; plan winter legs on far less than the rated figure.
  • Never pass a working fast charger on I-80 with a low battery, even if the next town looks close.
  • Book hotels with a plug where you can: overnight Level 2 covers a lot of ground in a sparse state.
